Creative Projects
Creative Projects take time and every person has their individual process. The Creative Faculty will learn your preferences and provide help to you during two half-hour private tutorials during the course of the Institute. Whether your project is a song or an instrumental piece for acoustic instruments or a mash-up of audio clips from other sources, our Faculty have years of teaching experience, technical expertise and will provide resources and guidance as you work throughout the week. Every participant is encouraged to create a minimum of one minute of music every days during the Institute. Additional tutorials are available for $25/half-hour.
What will you do during COI?
What will you do during COI?
- Learn how to use multiple DAWs (digital audio workstations) as creative tools. Instruction will be given on a wide variety of DAW platforms giving you experience editing and mixing tracks. You will also have two 20-minute one-on-one tutorials with one of our Creative Faculty members. Additional tutorials available for $25 each.
- Participate in one-hour online interactive Labs that put a wide variety of music theories into practice.
- Collaborate with our featured performers and other composers in your cohort on your creative project. During the first Forum, you will talk with our featured performers about your ideas.
During the second Forum, they will read down first sketches of your music and give you feedback during an extended live zoom session.
By the end of the week, they will record music you've written and then mix those tracks. - Mix all of your tracks during the last weekend as you complete your creative project.
- Bond with the other composers in the Institute during daily informal, "no agenda" gatherings called Lounges. They are an opportunity to ask questions and get answers, to initiate partnerships, to exchange idea and discuss and demonstrate music you admire or that you've created.
Why participate? Focus your attention in a short, intensive span of time and work with others to realize your musical ideas.
> Generate rich and exciting musical ideas
> Capture those ideas in notation or a recording
> Enhance & improve your ideas
> Share your music with an audience and your peers
> Discover new skills and approaches to creating music
Where: COVID-19 caused Junior Composers Summer Programs to pivot away from its summer residential music camp in 2020 and re-invent an authentic experience online. COI is that re-imagined experience and it has become something more expansive, more inclusive and more centered on the creative process with less emphasis on music theory instruction and preparations for a live performance.

Acknowledgement of support
We want to thank, especially, the ASCAP Foundation & the BMI Foundation for scholarships to support talented musicians participating in all Junior Composers Summer Programs including the Composers Online Institute. Their support is focussed on composers who might otherwise face barriers to participation based on race, ethnicity, nationality, gender identity, sexual orientation, physical/medical/mental ability, religious identity, familial status, economic status, musical training or genre.
We are equally grateful for the support of the music clubs of Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin that form the North Central Region of the National Federation of Music Clubs. Finally, we owe our sustained vitality to the many families, alumni, volunteers and music teachers whose generosity inspire and support young music-makers in their pursuit of musical expression.
Composers Online Institutes (COI) are produced by Junior Composers Summer Programs (JCSP).
